Salmon Fraud in Seattle research study

Fishy Business in Seattle: Salmon mislabeling fraud in sushi restaurants vs grocery stores

Salmon is the most common consumed fish in the United States. Locally, salmon are an integral part of the Pacific Northwest and have sustained Native Americans for thousands of years. Washington State is a global supplier of wild-caught Pacific salmon species, and it is estimated that ~2.9 million Washington State adults will consume salmon in 2030. Salmon fraud not only hurts the customer financially, but it also negatively impacts wild salmon conservation and sustainability efforts. Therefore, Washington State passed legislation that makes the misidentification of sold salmon illegal and requires vendors to label salmon as “wild-caught” Pacific salmon or “farmed” Atlantic salmon. Dr. Delgado and a team of 50 Seattle Pacific University undergraduate students recently conducted a large-scale salmon mislabeling research study (fall 2022 - fall 2023) to identify incidences of salmon mislabeling by genetically testing salmon samples from Seattle WA grocery stores and sushi restaurants.

The results of this study have been accepted for publication. It will be published on Nov 6th, 2024 at 2pm EST and will be posted on this website once it is available to the public.
